Keilor singer moves up Sri Lankan pop charts

A teenage pop singer from Keilor has won thousands of new fans after shooting up the charts of an influential radio show with just her third single … only the show is in Sri Lanka, not Australia.

Erandi Banneyake’s Moving On Up – a song about girl power and independence – recently made the cut on Sri Lankan radio station YesFM’s ‘Home Grown Top 15’.

The 14-year-old teamed up with Sri Lankan rapper Krishan to produce the song.

Although Erandi was born in Sydney, she travels regularly to Sri Lanka to visit her grandparents and other relatives.

“We go back every two years and every time we go we record a song,” the Overnewton College student says.

“We asked Krishan to help out and he was keen, so we wrote the song together.

“I was always singing into my toy microphone as a kid. I started singing lessons at nine and it’s been an amazing experience so far.”

Erandi’s Facebook page has also been running hot, accumulating more than 2000 likes in just a few weeks.
