STATE: Anti-bikie taskforce announced

Outlaw motorcycle gang members are in the sights of the state and federal governments with a special strike force to be organised as part of the ongoing crackdown on bikies.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine and federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan made the announcement on Wednesday morning, with a new strike team to form part of the $64 million national anti-gangs taskforce.

Five Australian Federal Police investigators and a special investigator from the Australian Tax Office are expected to be embedded with Victoria Police organised crime specialists as part of the crack team.

The Victorian strike team will begin operations immediately.

Mr Keenan will provide individual state task forces access to national intelligence files to ensure smoother access when investigating illegal motorcycle gang activities.

Earlier this month, Victorian police staged the largest raid on a single motorcycle club when it swooped on Hells Angels clubhouses and members’ homes, seizing guns, ammunition, drugs and cash.

Queensland recently passed tough new laws to stop bikie gang crime, and NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione has called for national laws to address the problem.
