FERNTREE GULLY: Man sought for sex assaults

A man who may have sexually assaulted five teenage boys between 1980 and 2004 in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs is wanted by police.

The first reported case, which occurred in 1984, involved the abduction of a 16-year-old boy from the Heatherdale train station between February and September. The offender drove the victim to an unknown property in Ferntree Gully, where he gave the teenager alcohol before sexually assaulting him at knifepoint.

Police have reviewed four more recent unsolved sexual assaults on young boys in the eastern suburbs, and believe there is a link between those and the earlier case.

In all five cases, a man offered the victims alcohol and cannabis before driving them to properties in the Ferntree Gully area and sexually assaulting them.

Police have released an image of a man they believe is responsible for assaulting the five boys.

The 1984 suspect is described as Caucasian, aged 30 to 35, 175 centimetres tall, with short brown hair, a moustache and solid build. He was driving a light-blue Mitsubishi sedan.

In 2004, police believe the suspect was Caucasian, aged 50 to 55, 175 centimetres tall and had short grey hair and a moustache.

Detective Senior Constable Brett Regan said police are aware that “a long time has passed since the incident”, but that the release of this information could “jog the memory of someone who may have witnessed the event”.

“Due to the traumatic nature of this crime, we’d like to catch this man so it doesn’t happen to anyone else,” he said.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on  1800 333 000.
