Union fined for 2008 strike

THE Federal Court has ordered the Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union to pay a $50,000 fine for staging an unlawful strike at Caroline Springs Square shopping centre.

Employees of Bovin Lend Lease staged the two-day protest in 2008 after the introduction of a photo card security system for workers.

Bovin Lend Lease was the head contractor of the $30million shopping centre.

Australian Building and Construction commissioner Leigh Jones said the strike was part of a wider CFMEU campaign against the card system between May and December 2008.

“This campaign disrupted several major Melbourne building sites, including the Royal Children’s Hospital, to the detriment of the wider Victorian community,” he said.
