A man accused of stabbing a good Samaritan as she tried to stop a fight in Melbourne’s west yesterday will face court today.
Detectives last night charged a 26 year old over the double stabbing at Sunshine railway station just after 4pm yesterday.
Police said the 61-year-old woman was attempting to break-up a fight between a group of people when she was stabbed in the torso in a tunnel at the railway station.
Bystanders rushed to her aid and applied pressure to her wound before emergency services arrived.
Paramedics controlled the woman’s bleeding and gave her pain relief drugs before taking her to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
A 14-year-old girl also suffered minor stab wounds in the fight and was taken to Western Hospital in Footscray in a stable condition.
Police arrested a man and a woman in their 20s yesterday afternoon and questioned them overnight.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman this morning said the man had been charged with two counts of intentionally causing injury, two counts of recklessly causing injury, two counts of assault with a weapon and two counts of unlawful assault.
The Flemington man was remanded overnight to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court today.
The 20-year-old woman, also from Flemington, was released and is expected to be charged on summons with similar offences.
