STUDENTS at a Sydenham school are being equipped with tools to deal with issues like low self-esteem, eating disorders and anxiety.
Copperfield College year 10 students took part in seminars on March 20 to help them make informed decisions when faced with common problems.
The well-being day started with a drug and alcohol awareness presentation by a police resource officer. This was followed by a seminar on building respectful relationships and a program to teach students to step away
from violence, conducted by professional boxers Sam Soliman and Sam Colomban.
A dietitian ran a session on healthy eating while a Brimbank Youth Services counsellor spoke about body image issues.
The school’s resident psychologist, Kellie Jasper, says many young people struggle with confidence and feelings of inadequacy.
“I talk to a lot of young girls and body image issues comes up a lot and it’s the same with boys. It doesn’t matter how beautiful they are, they still worry about their appearance.”
Ms Jasper says many students don’t eat enough food to get them through the day because they are trying to
slim down.
“Some students think it’s fine to not eat all day, but it can impact on their health and productivity in class.
“The dietitian showed them they can still look and feel healthy by giving their body what it needs.”
