MORE than 60 guns have been seized in Melbourne’s north-west in the past eight months as part of an aggressive police operation targeting known criminals.
As part of Taskforce Acer, launched last July after a spate of shootings, police
processed 250 offenders, seized 64 firearms and executed 76 search warrants.
The taskforce has also impounded 19 vehicles, helped recover more than $1million for the Sheriff’s Office and seized a number of items, including equipment used to manufacture illicit drugs and cash.
Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Tymms
said the taskforce aimed to disrupt criminal activity, targeting the possession and use of firearms, drug manufacture and trafficking, theft and vehicle offences. “We also gather intelligence to assist investigations being undertaken by other areas and can be deployed in a rapid response capability on short-term operations and investigations.”
Senior Sergeant Tymms conceded there was still plenty of work to do. “Residents have a right to feel safe in their own communities and making that happen is definitely something we hope is occurring alongside the taskforce’s results.”
