A Sunshine drama teacher is relishing the rare chance to let someone else run the show.
Ariel Verona hits the stage this week in Done To Perfection, a group-devised project incorporating dance, physical theatre, dialogue and fantastical characters.
Produced by Weave Movement Theatre, the show draws its material from the members of the group and turns it into a performance.
“The directors offer us different provocations, take the material away and then bring it together,” Verona says.
Weave draws together performers with and without disability and offers a wry, often absurdist take on the human condition.
Verona has been performing with the company for eight years and was drawn by its “twisted sense of humour”. “I’m attracted to it as I’m a drama teacher, so normally I have to run everything,” she says. “So it’s liberating to really let go and see what can happen.”
Intriguingly described as “Frankenstein meets Sex and the City”, Done To Perfection is a critique of modern society and the struggle for our bodies and minds.
Verona says audiences should expect a lot of movement and more dance than in traditional theatre.
Done To Perfection is at the Dancehouse in Carlton, 8pm, Thursday to Saturday, and 3pm on Sunday. There will also be a special one-off performance at the Brunswick Town Hall at 3pm on April 29.
