Market days a cure for Delahey housing estate isolation

DISADVANTAGED and marginalised people living in a Delahey housing estate are benefiting from taking part in social activities.

Residents at the Wintringham housing and support service held a market day on March 28, giving them a chance to mix with the wider community.

The market included stalls set up by the Country Women’s Association and Tupperware and Avon representatives. Residents also made items, including jewellery, to sell on the day.

Wintringham site co-ordinator Debra James says events like the market are boosting the health and wellbeing of residents.

“Because many of our residents were previously homeless, they are not used to getting involved in social activities because they would have spent a lot of time living in isolation,” Ms James says.

“It’s great that they can all work together to run events and they all seemed to have a great time.”

Wintringham was established in 2008 to provide independent housing to elderly men and women who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. It runs housing developments at sites across the west, including Delahey, Williamstown and Avondale Heights.
