A MAN was critically injured when he was struck by a car that then fled the scene in Sunshine last night.
Police are hunting for a white or silver Mercedes believed to have suffered panel damage in the hit-and-run crash just after 8pm.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the 26-year-old man was attempting to cross Durham Road, near the intersection with Watt Street, when he was struck by the Mercedes, which was travelling west.
The vehicle, which had a sun roof and mag wheels, did not stop to help the injured pedestrian.
Detectives from the major collision investigation unit believe the driver of a white Toyota sedan travelling behind the Mercedes have appealed for that driver to come forward, believing he may have witnessed the crash.
An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said the pedestrian suffered serious head and facial injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
