Yarns from vault of memories

MUSINGS and memories are being compiled at a Delahey aged-care service into chronicles of history.

Kalyna Care has been garnering the life stories of residents, readying them for a book.

Staff sit with residents, listen to their stories and record them. “Staff members are then given a project to produce a storyboard for each resident, and it’s theirs to display when others come to visit,” general manager Mark Sheldon-Stemm says.

Kalyna Care has already released a book, Your Story, and hopes to publish a second edition this year. “Families are often very pleased and discover things about their parents or grandparents that surprise them,” Mr Sheldon-Stemm said.

Kalyna Care hopes to extend the initiative by publishing the books online and providing computers for residents to write, edit and share their stories directly online with the community. “Families and relatives really enjoy finding out about the histories of loved ones and staff also enjoy being able to be connected to people through their story,” Mr Sheldon-Stemm said.

“It’s our own version of Who Do You Think You Are, where stories are told and passed on to the next generation.”
