THE federal budget has delivered a mixed bag for residents feeling the pinch from rising living costs.
Maribyrnong MP Bill Shorten said he understood many people felt they were missing out on the benefits of a strong economy underpinned by the mining boom.
“That’s why the budget will spread the benefits of the mining boom to help everyday Australians with cost of living pressures.”
The budget included cash payments to families of $410 for each primary school child and $820 for each child in high school, a rise in the pension, family payment increases and extra allowances to help people pay bills.
Brimbank Council chairman Peter Lewinsky said aged-care reform and National Disability Insurance Scheme funding were “forward thinking” initiatives.
He said Brimbank Council had to look at the impact of carbon pricing but would absorb costs for its buildings and power use, and look to cut expenses by increasing efficiency.
