KEILOR Thunder looked the goods for a quarter on its long trip to Mildura in the Victorian Basketball League Big V women’s division 1 at the Mildura Basketball Stadium on Saturday night.
Too bad a game of basketball is played over four quarters because the Thunder’s last three periods were some of the most insipid they have put together all season, as they were rolled 63-40 in a disappointing end to a night which started so promisingly.
The Thunder silenced the home fans to take a six-point lead into quarter-time.
That was where the joy ended for the visitors with the second period a total disaster.
The Thunder scored just three points on 1-of-14 shooting for a negative 13-point swing.
All the momentum they built in the opening exchanges had seeped away by half-time.
The second half saw Mildura gradually build to a convincing win, leaving the newly promoted Thunder with two wins from eight starts.
Jessica Francke (10 points and six rebounds), Karla Mavor (11 points and seven rebounds) and Kristen Mavor (seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block) were the pick of the Thunder players, but there was minimal impact from the bench.
The Thunder needs to regroup quickly for a crucial double-header weekend.
They make the short trip to Sunbury on Saturday night before hitting the road again on Sunday for a meeting with Camberwell.
