BRIMBANK police have removed 10 unregistered cars from roads after a one-day operation.
Police detected 26 traffic offences, catching seven unlicensed drivers and three disqualified or suspended drivers during Operation Barra last Tuesday.
A 66-year-old man was issued with three defect notices and had his car impounded after being caught driving while disqualified on the Western Highway in Burnside.
Police used automated numberplate recognition technology to detect the offences.
The technology scans numberplates and alerts police on whether the vehicle’s registration has expired, the vehicle reported has been stolen, or whether the owner is suspended or disqualified from driving.
Officers from the Sheriff’s Office also nabbed 55 people with about 750 outstanding infringements totalling more than $224,000.
Brimbank’s Sergeant Rod Stein said police would continue to target dangerous drivers to make streets safe for all road users.
Operation Barra is part of the ‘We Are The Toll’ campaign, launched by Victoria Police following predictions that this year’s road toll could be 30 or 40 higher than last year.
Police will continue to conduct large-scale operations throughout the state.
