YEAR 11 St Albans Secondary College students Johnny Radas and Kimmy Duong (pictured) dressed in yellow to raise suicide awareness last week. Students got behind Thursday’s RU OK? Day, writing ‘love’ on their wrists and selling handmade ribbons and wristbands. RU OK? Day is aimed at helping stop little problems growing bigger just by asking someone, ‘Are you OK?’
The school’s adolescent-health nurse Nicky Collins-Smith said it was important that everyone — staff and students — was aware of suicide warning signs. “Students can make a huge difference when they know about things going on in their communities. If they are aware of it, they can help out.”
During the day, students sold hundreds of wristbands, about 400 ribbons, and coffee cups ($1 each), which were filled with free hot chocolate at the canteen. Lifeline: 13 11 14.
