RUNNING the same route day after day can get boring, but now people can exercise in a ‘virtual’ world thanks to a new health and fitness centre at Victoria University.
“Our revolutionary Lifescape technology provides an interactive screen on all cardio machines that allows the person using them to simulate a walk, ride, trek or jog through worldwide locations,” sports facilities coordinator Tim Burdeu says.
“So rather than taking the same familiar route, people can hike in Yosemite National Park or walk around the Champagne region of southern France.”
He says the days of gyms being only for muscle-bound men are long gone.
“Today, it’s all about functional movement and keeping people stimulated to increase overall health, fitness and quality of life.”
The $5.6 million centre, which opened earlier this month, isn’t just for students, all members of the community are welcome. “We offer members support through individual and group training, including programs for people with disabilities, teenagers, elderly, chronic disease sufferers and elite athletes,” Tim says.
All members receive an assessment and personalised program as part of their membership, which will be reviewed to maintain progress towards their health and fitness goals.
“Our programs include Living Longer, Living Stronger for over 50’s, Teen Gym, Access For All Abilities and personal training.”
Group classes range from Les Mills’ high-impact weight-bearing ‘pump’ and boxing to flexibility and strength ‘body balance’.
The centre has a range of fitness equipment including TRX suspension trainers, TRX Rip, Slosh balls, power bands, plyometric steps and bosu balls. Multi-purpose courts for basketball, netball, futsal, volley ball and badminton are also available.
“Unlike most commercial gyms we have no joining or cancellation fees and no lock-in contracts,” Tim adds.
