HOMICIDE detectives have charged a man with the murder of his mother in Sunshine West last Tuesday.
The Sunshine West man, 23, has been charged with one count of murder and two of attempted murder.
He was deemed medically unfit to appear in court and has been remanded in custody until June 19.
Police were called to a neighbourhood dispute in Felstead Avenue about 7.25am last Tuesday.
The man, believed to be armed with a tomahawk, was found outside the house and uniform police called critical incident response team officers.
The officers shot the man with a beanbag round and arrested him about 10am.
Police found the body of Athiel Manel, 59, in a bungalow at the rear of the property. Wailing family members collapsed in the street after Ms Manel’s body was found.
Residents in Felstead Avenue and nearby Roberts Crescent said they were shaken by the ordeal.
One resident, who asked not to be named, said he heard what he thought were gun shots and the sound of a man screaming.
“I ran to the window and I could see police cars everywhere,” he said.
“A policeman knocked on my door and told us not to come outside until they said it was OK. We watched from our front window. We were inside for more than two hours, it was terrifying.”
Another woman, who also didn’t want to be identified, said she had just finished working night shift when the incident unfolded.
“You always hear of these things, but you never think they will happen in your own street, I’m still in shock. I don’t feel like our street will ever be the same.”
