Swanston Street wall collapse prompts Brimbank action on planning permits

Brimbank Council is reviewing all planning permit applications involving heritage buildings over the past two years. It follows the deaths of three people after a brick wall collapsed in Swanston Street, Carlton, on March 28. Brimbank acting general manager of city development Stuart Menzies said council inspectors regularly assessed buildings and other structures, including walls, where there was an issue of structural integrity. “Council’s parking and local laws officers are photographing buildings, walls or other structures where they observe an issue and are referring these to the council’s building department for investigation.”
