BRIMBANK police have promised to crack down on low-level speeding following a successful traffic operation in St Albans.
Almost 260 motorists were nabbed by police during Operation Stoop 2 on Taylors Road.
A total of 348 offences were recorded between April 3 and June 17, including 136 speeding infringements. Forty unregistered cars and 19 disqualified drivers were detected and eight vehicles impounded.
North-west region’s Inspector Simon Stevens said the operation, which followed “high levels of road trauma in Brimbank and Melton”, was a success.
“However, it was disappointing to see us still detecting drivers
disobeying the law and putting themselves and others in danger.
“We are here to help the community be safe on our roads and will continue to do so, however we really need the community’s help to achieve this long term.”
Of the 348 offences detected, only three involved drink-driving.
Inspector Stevens said low-level speeding – less than 10km/h over the limit – would remain a focus as it played a major part in road trauma.
Transport Accident Commission data released last week showed hospital admissions from crashes in Brimbank almost doubled in two years, with 182 people admitted in the year to October 2012, up from 92 admissions in 2010.
Brimbank recorded the fourth-highest number of fatalities in metropolitan Melbourne for the year to April with eight, behind Geelong and Hume at 14, and Wyndham at 11.
