EDFL: Taylors Lakes fightback too late

TAYLORS Lakes mounted a late comeback, but it wasn’t enough to seal victory against Glenroy in Essendon District Football League division 1.

The Lions trailed by 36 points at three-quarter time and turned it on in the last quarter with five goals, but the Wallabies kicked two of their own to ensure a 16-point victory.

The loss means Taylors Lakes, fourth, is now six points behind Glenroy, third. Tullamarine (nine wins, one draw) and Northern Saints (nine wins) sit in the top two.

The first and third-placed teams will get home semi-finals.

Glenroy got the jump early at Sewell Reserve, booting five goals in the opening term and six in the second to get out to a 35-point lead by the half-time break. The Lions improved in the second half and were able to restrict the Wallabies to five goals, booting eight of their own, but they  left their run too late.

Chris Ragusa was one of the best for Taylors Lakes with four goals, while Rick Asciak and Jackson Wright were terrific.

In premier division, Keilor is all but out of finals contention after a 79-point loss to ladder-leaders Greenvale. The Jets booted nine goals in the second term to break the game open and with 18 goals to six after quarter-time, they proved far too strong for the Blues.

In division 2, Hillside moved to first on the ladder with a 141-point win over Keilor Park. The Sharks are now a game clear after Moonee Valley’s loss to East Keilor.
