VPL: Green Gully Cavaliers thump leaders 3-1

GREEN Gully Cavaliers put league leaders Northcote City to the sword in an impressive 3-1 thrashing at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday.

This was no flash in the pan performance for the Cavs, having accumulated 23 of a possible 30 points in their past 10 matches to move to fifth place in the Victorian Premier League.

The Cavaliers got the early goal they desired through Mitchell Bissinger but suffered a spanner in the works when Andy Vargas was sent off and player-coach Jeff Fleming was forced into a reshuffle.

The Cavs found a much-needed insurance goal when Mathew Sanders slotted home from the penalty spot after Osagie Ederaro was tripped.

Jason Hayne made it 3-0 and even though they were down to  10 men, there was no stopping the in-form Cavs.

James Kalifatidis scored a consolation goal for City.

The Cavs have beaten two of the top three sides in the past fortnight and face an important clash with sixth-placed Port Melbourne Sharks at JL Murphy Reserve at 8.30pm on Friday.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Knights held on for a 1-0 win over winless Southern Stars on the road on Saturday evening, the winner coming after seven minutes through Marijan Cvitkovic.

Third-placed Knights will meet second-ranked Bentleigh Greens in a blockbuster at Knights Stadium at 3pm on Sunday.

In state league 2, Westgate extended its unbeaten run to seven games with an eye catching 3-1 win over promotion contender Keilor Park at Ardeer Reserve on Friday night.

The damage was done early with Brett Gilmour scoring the first two goals and Kwabee Otou-Acheampong making it three before the break. The Parkers’ only goal came through Steven Mussel.
