Big V: Keilor Thunder women win game one of grand final series

CAN Keilor Thunder’s momentum be halted in the Big V basketball women’s division 2 finals?

Thunder qualified for the playoffs in fourth place and were the
underdogs at the start of August. But now they’re hot favourites to
complete a miraculous run to the title.

A week after sweeping minor premiership Werribee Devils, the
Thunder have taken a 1-0 lead over Casey Cavaliers in the best-of-three
grand final series.

The series will swing back to the Cavaliers’ home court for the
last two games this weekend, but the Thunder have already shown in these
playoffs that home court advantage is not all it’s cracked up to be for
the higher-ranked teams.

Keilor led at the end of every quarter for a nail-biting 70-67 win
in game one at Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday night. Jodi Impey
has playoffs MVP written all over her after a scintillating 24-point,
11-rebound display.

In game one of a best-of-three men’s division 2 grand final
series, Keilor Thunder is on the back foot after relinquishing an
eight-point, three-quarter-time lead to lose 54-46 to Melton
Thoroughbreds at Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday.

Thoroughbreds coach Grant Spencer must have been feeling uneasy
with a quarter to go, having declared that his side would “win both
games by 20 points”.

The Thoroughbreds took the series opener only after a 16-3
last-quarter run, while Thunder shot a miserable 1 from 18 from the
field.

Game two and three, if required, will be at the Melton Indoor Recreation Centre this weekend.
