VPL: Green Gully consolidates spot, St Albans beaten

Green Gully has claimed a crucial 3-0 win over rock bottom
Southern Stars to consolidate its place in the Victorian Premier League
top six.

Things did not go exactly to plan for the Cavaliers in a goal-less
opening hour, but their blushes were spared in a scintillating final 23
minutes.

Daniel Jones broke the deadlock to give the Cavs the lead after 67 minutes before Osagie Ederaro fired in a double at the death.

The Cavs will not have the luxury of a week’s break like most of
the other VPL sides this weekend because they have a date with Dandenong
Thunder in the much-anticipated state knockout cup final at Knights
Stadium on Sunday.

St Albans Saints were no match for state league 1 promotion
hunters Moreland Zebras in a 2-0 loss on the road at Reddish Reserve.

The Saints, under new co-coaches Tom Pondeljak and Zeljko Kuzman, are all but assured their safety in the division.

Cairnlea’s position at the top of state league 3 is under attack
from up to four clubs. The Reds’ lead is just two points after a
disappointing 1-1 draw with Altona City.

Second-placed Westvale missed out on its chance to leapfrog the Reds, losing 4-1 to Moreland United.

North Sunshine Eagles, who sit third, three points behind Cairnlea
but with two games in hand, missed a golden opportunity to claim a
share of top spot after a 2-0 defeat to Yarraville Glory.

Western Eagles are hellbent on finishing the state league 4 season
on a bright note, beating Williamstown 2-0 in a middle of the ladder
stouch.

Brimbank Stallions’ promotion bid in state league 5 took another jolt in a 1-1 draw with first year Spring Hills FC.

Balmoral had a memorable 4-3 win over Melbourne Lions, just its fourth success of the winter.

It was a bleak afternoon for Keilor Wolves, slaughtered 6-1 by Laverton Park.

Sunshine Heights Western Tigers were defeated 4-0 by a return-to-form Altona North.
