Caring for kids a lifetime of work

After 30 years caring for dozens of children, Deer Park’s Bev Brierty has been honoured with a major state award.

Ms Brierty was presented with the Robin Clark Memorial Award for carer of the year during last week’s Foster Care Week.

When Ms Brierty and her husband Terry decided to provide their two
children with more siblings, they immediately considered foster care.

“I really wanted a large family,” Ms Brierty said. “It’s no different really to rearing your own children.”

With family support service Baptcare pointing to a serious
shortage of foster carers in the western suburbs, Ms Brierty offered
advice for potential candidates: “Take on each day as it comes, and look
on the bright side.”

Baptcare will host a forum for potential foster carers on Friday at the Visy Cares Hub, 80b Harvester Road, Sunshine.
