Brimbank council seeks people for leadership program

A Cairnlea community support worker says a free community leadership program is a superb avenue to personal and professional change.

Brimbank council is seeking 18 people from the Deer Park, Sunshine and surrounding suburbs – including Albion, Ardeer, Brooklyn, Cairnlea and Derrimut – to join the seven-week program next month.

Aman Brar, who took part in the program last year, says it helped her grow as a leader.

“It’s not a course where you just learn about an office hierarchy,” she said.

“It helped me a lot. I enjoyed the session about personalities and how to work with different people and develop a better understanding of your team or those in management.”

Ms Brar said tackling activities such as making presentations boosted confidence and helped build connections.

“I made friends and developed a better understanding of how council operates,” she said.

“I thought all they did was deal with fines, but we learnt about how funding and grants work.”

Ms Brar said being a good leader required a well-rounded person.

“It’s about being a person who understands themselves, who’s open and responsible and willing to work towards improving themselves and their organisation,” she said.

The subsidised program will begin on March5 and run every Thursday from 6-8.30pm until April 23 at the Sunshine Convention Centre.

Applications close on February 13 and can be made online at www.brimbank.vic.gov.au/communitytraining.
