An ammonia leak in a meat factory in Brooklyn, which forced the evacuation of 1100 workers, has been contained.
The Swift Australia Meat Production facility was evacuated after about 100 litres of ammonia leaked into the roof space of a chiller room at about 10.50am Monday.
Ten Metropolitan Fire Brigade vehicles and two commanders were called to the incident at Industry Park Drive.
An MFB spokesman said the workers were let back into the factory after about 90 minutes, although the affected area remains sealed off.
The factory’s maintenance division is investigating, he said.
The chiller room is believed to be 35 metres by 15 metres. Firefighters used breathing equipment and protective suits at the scene to clear the leak and monitor air and wind conditions.
One firefighter was taken to the Western Hospital with a minor eye irritation.
WorkCover and the Environment Protection Authority were also called.
