MY SHOUT: Contradiction is galling

Of the many political contradictions that filter into the community, none are more galling than those surrounding asylum seekers.

Like the notion that someone can be very concerned about asylum seekers’ safety at sea while happily leaving them to rot in internment camps with scant regard for their safety or mental well-being.

Then there’s the opposition to spending millions on resettling asylum seekers while condoning billions spent on locking them up off shore.

Locking up asylum seekers is a cruel smokescreen that makes people think their way of life is being protected, while taking the focus off threats under their noses, such as a push to tighten worker entitlements, including penalty rates.

Meanwhile, while we prevented several thousand asylum seekers from making a life here, we happily allowed 126,000 people to come into Australia on 457 visas.
