New Brimbank council administrator John Tanner appointed

UPDATE: Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell today announced the appointment of John Tanner to the panel of administrators for Brimbank council.

Mrs Powell said Mr Tanner’s appointment filled the vacancy created by Peter Lewinsky’s resignation. Mr Lewinsky resigned following his appointment as Monitor of Darebin City Council.

“I am delighted that Mr Tanner is able to join the panel of administrators for Brimbank City Council. Mr Tanner will draw from his extensive experience in local government, small business and regional development,” Mrs Powell said.

“Mr Tanner served as the Local Government Commissioner in the Shire of Delatite from 1994 to 1997 and his expertise in community engagement, management, governance and strategic planning will enable him to bring considerable skills to Brimbank City Council.

“The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to building a strong local government sector that is transparent, accountable and responsive to the needs of residents and ratepayers.

“This appointment will further embed good governance practices, effectively manage strategic local projects and continue to restore community confidence in the council’s ability to govern.”

Mr Tanner has served as a delegate on the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce, a member of the State Executive Australian Small Business Association and as State Chairman of the Timber Industry Road Evaluation Study, as well as a board member for a number of regional organisations.

Brimbank council was dismissed on November 18, 2009 following findings of profound failures of governance by the Ombudsman, and a recommendation to remove the council by an Inspector of Municipal Administration.

Brimbank Chair of Administrators John Watson welcomed the announcement.

“Myself and fellow administrator Jane Nathan, as well as CEO Bill Jaboor and all executive and staff, are pleased to hear John will be joining us at Brimbank.

“Together with John’s input and experience we are in an even stronger position to continue to build community capacity and deliver needed capital projects in preparation for the return of Councillors in March 2015.

“Since the administration at Council began in 2009 community sentiment and satisfaction with Brimbank Council has increased and we have maintained an ongoing commitment to making a better Brimbank.

“We welcome John to the Brimbank community, a thriving and transforming city that is fast becoming the dynamic centre of the West.”

Mr Tanner is expected to be sworn in at the next council meeting on March 11.
