The man charged with killing his two young daughters on Easter Sunday has appeared in court and been remanded in custody.
Charles Amon Mihayo sat behind glass and was flanked by three security guards as he briefly appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Mr Mihayo, 35, is charged with two counts of murder over the deaths of his daughters, Savannah, four, and Indiana, three.
Police were called to the Watsonia home of the girls’ grandmother after screams were heard on Sunday afternoon. A number of family members were at the house at the time. Mr Mihayo lived in a flat at the back of his former mother-in-law’s home.
Police have not said what happened to the girls or how they died. No details of the incident were provided in court on Tuesday.
Mr Mihayo, with his hair cut short and wearing a black Adidas windcheater, did not say anything during his brief court appearance.
He looked straight ahead towards the bar table when first led in to court and then kept his head bowed, occasionally raising his eyes.
Prosecutor Patrick O’Halloran told the court the girls’ family requested the children’s surname not be published.
Charge sheets have the names of the girls blacked out.
Magistrate John Doherty remanded Mr Mihayo in custody to return to court on August 12 for a committal mention hearing. There was no application for bail.
