Albion Football Club hopes Friday’s Western Region Football League clash with Deer Park will be the start of an Anzac Day tradition.
The match between the two division 1 sides is one of three WRFL matches to be played on Anzac Day. Fellow division 1 teams Sunshine and Werribee Districts will play at Kinder Smith Reserve, while for the third straight year division 2’s Braybrook will host a game, this year against Albanvale at Pennell Reserve.
Cats administrator Mal Thompson said the club had approached the league about playing on Anzac Day.
“It’s the first year we have done this and we are hoping it will be a good day, a blockbuster,” he said.
“There’s been a good reaction and Albion and Deer Park have both jumped on board.
“We will have a guard of honour for our veterans at our president’s lunch. The RSL is going to be involved and we will have Aboriginal elders holding a ceremony. The playing group are excited about being able to play.”
Thompson says the Jim Gaylor-Jamie Madigan Cup, honouring two legends of the clubs, will be presented to the winners of the seniors’ match, while two Anzac medals will go to outstanding players, one each in the seniors and reserves.
