Construction on a new $268 million police complex that will consolidate three existing police sites is well under way.
Police Minister Kim Wells inspected works at City West Police last week. The 12-storey complex, which is being built on the former site of the Australia Post distribution centre on Spencer Street, was first announced in 2012.
When complete, it will house 1500 staff of the North West Metropolitan Region headquarters, Melbourne West police station, crime command and intelligence command.
“This new complex will bring key crime-fighting groups together under one roof at a centralised city location and will be the first purpose-built police building in the CBD since Russell Street was built in 1943,” Mr Wells said.
“Currently, key parts of Victoria Police are spread across a number of locations around St Kilda Road and the World Trade Centre on Flinders Street.
“Importantly, this new complex will enhance communication and information-sharing between major crime and intelligence functions.”
The complex is expected to be complete by mid next year.
