Police have charged a man over a stabbing death in St Albans last week.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad have charged 30-year-old Vatthana Chounlamountry with one count of murder.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday, after the

Star Weekly went to print.

A warrant was issued for his arrest following the death of a man at an Adams Street house in St Albans last Tuesday.

Police found Mr Chounlamountry at a Glengala Road hotel in Sunshine on Saturday and spent the morning negotiating with him.

He was arrested by Homicide Squad detectives, with the assistance of the Special Operations Group, about 12.30pm.

A 24-year-old woman was also arrested at the scene.

Both were taken to Footscray’s Western Hospital under police guard.

Police also recovered two children from the room just after midday. The children did not suffer any injuries.

Brimbank Inspector Chris Gilbert said while the stabbing was not a domestic dispute, it is believed the victim and offender were known to each other.

“We certainly are confident that it’s not something that neighbours should be concerned about here.

“It’s not a random attack,” Inspector Gilbert said.

“It’s a terrible attack. This is generally a safe area and neighbours will be quite rightly concerned. But we can assure them this is a safe area.”

Neighbour Alex Zdrnja, who lives down the road from the crime scene, said the attack had unnerved him.
