STATE: Cold snap to bring snow and rain

Victorians should brace themselves for a blast of wintry weather over the next few days, with heavy rain expected in Melbourne and snowfalls on the Alps.

Melbourne will have a top temperature of just 14 degrees on Friday and Saturday, while Sunday will reach 15, according to Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Scott Williams.

‘‘It’s certainly a bleakish weekend. It’s a chilly start to May,’’ said Mr Williams.

‘‘The wettest period in Melbourne will be Friday night into Saturday morning and then it will get back into showery weather late on Saturday and into Sunday.

‘‘It will become quite a deep low-pressure system. It will drive cold south-west winds across the state.’’

Mr Williams said that between noon Friday and the end of Saturday, about 20 millimetres would fall in the Melbourne metropolitan area, with falls of up to 40 millimetres in the eastern suburbs.

He said there would not be enough rain to cause flooding. There would, however, be snow in elevated areas.

‘‘It will be cold enough for snowfalls, probably getting down to around 1200-metre levels. So certainly all the alpine areas will pick up some pretty good snowfalls.’’

Mr Williams said that over the past 30 years, the first week of May had been cold only five times. The most recent early cold snap in May had been in 2012, when temperatures in Melbourne dipped to 13 and 14 in the first week.

‘‘May can get cold early,’’ he said.
