NPL: Persistent Green Gully nets vital away win over Werribee City

Green Gully Soccer Club continued its strong midseason form in the National Premier League with a 3-0 victory against western suburbs rival Werribee City on Sunday.

The Cavaliers scored twice in the first half and once in the second to sink the Bees.

Despite the lopsided final score it was a tough hit-out early, with neither team able to break the deadlock in the early stages.

However, as the clock ticked past the 30-minute mark, the Cavaliers hit the scoreboard when Jason Hayne capitalised on a Werribee turnover.

Green Gully doubled its advantage five minutes later thanks to a Matthew Sanders strike and went into the half-time break in complete control.

The Cavaliers made it 3-0 in the 71st minute through Ratip Cileli to seal the important away win.

Green Gully moved into sixth on the ladder, while Werribee City dropped to ninth.

The Bees will take on Hume City and Green Gully will meet Dandenong Thunder in round 15 this weekend.

In NPL1, it was a tough day at the office for Sunshine George Cross, which fell to Bendigo 2-0 on Saturday.

The Georgies conceded a goal in each half to hand Bendigo the win.

The result continues what has been a hard stretch for Sunshine George Cross, which has lost its past three matches.

Speaking before his club’s clash with Bendigo, Georgies’ president Jamie Chetcuti was still impressed with the way his young side had attacked the season.

“We have got a lot of young players that are in a development program,” Chetcuti said.

“Yes, they are going to make mistakes, but we just have to persevere with thewm until the end product comes out to where we want it.

‘‘There’s plenty of time to get it right. We’re just trying to create and build a structure that’s going to set the club up for the next 15 years.”

Sunshine has a great chance to get its season back on track when it takes on bottom side Brunswick City this week.
