WRFL: Roos close in on top five after smashing Yarraville-Seddon

Sunshine moved to within one game of the Western Region Football League’s top five with a 91-point smashing of Yarraville-Seddon on Saturday.

Apart from being a must-win match, it was also a great opportunity for the Kangaroos to get a valuable percentage boost against bottom-of-the-table Yarraville, and they started as if they meant business with an eight-goal first term.

The margin was 36 points at half-time, but it was in the third quarter that the Kangaroos did even more damage.

For the second time in the match, Sunshine booted eight goals in a quarter to seal the win 22.11 (143) to 8.4 (52).

Patrick Wiggins booted six goals, while Aaron Williams chipped in with four.

For Yarraville, Daniel Burton (three) and Giles Guest (two) were the only multiple goal scorers.

Sunshine is now four points behind fourth-placed Hoppers Crossing on the division 1 ladder, with the pair to meet at Kinder Smith Reserve on Saturday.

The Eagles are still looking for their first win of the season but will have one of their best chances to break the duck when they take on second-from-bottom Port Melbourne.

In other weekend results, Albion produced one of its best wins for the season with a three-point victory over Altona.

The Cats led the match comfortably for the first three quarters before the Vikings kicked into gear in the final term.

After trailing by 23 points at the last break, Altona kicked five final-quarter goals to three.

But the Vikings were left to rue eight behinds in the final quarter, which allowed Albion to hang on for the 13.8 (86) to 11.17 (83) win.

Mustafa Mesto was outstanding for the winning side, booting six goals, while Josh Rafferty kicked four for Altona. The win moves Albion a game clear of the Vikings on the division 1 table, with the two teams occupying seventh and eighth on the ladder respectively.
