The fatal shooting of Sunshine West man Toan Truong in February was the result of a drug robbery gone wrong, police believe.
Six months on, homicide squad detectives are appealing for help to solve the murder of the 43-year-old father of one, who they say was shot at home by a would-be thief.
Toan’s older brother, Tai, described the slaying at the time as “senseless”.
Subsequent investigations have revealed the intruder was aware Toan was growing hydroponic cannabis in an upstairs bedroom at his Alison Street house and planned to steal the crop.
Toan’s pregnant wife, Qwen, had been told not to go upstairs, with Toan saying he was renovating the room for their baby and wanted it to be a surprise.
Toan was asleep with his wife and three-year- old child, Ethan, about 5am on February 3 when Qwen was woken by a noise on the ground floor of their two-storey home. After getting up to investigate, she noticed a man inside the house.
Toan chased the man to a rear bedroom, where the intruder fired two shots, fatally wounding him in front of his wife and child.
The man left the scene in a dark-coloured car, which police believe was parked nearby. CCTV vision showed the car speeding away towards Fitzgerald Road shortly after the shooting.
Police believe another two vehicles were in the area about 45 minutes before the murder, both believed to be dark-coloured, the first possibly a late-model Ford Falcon sedan and the second possibly a BMW, two-door coupe, or similar vehicle.
Police believe the three men in these vehicles may be able to help with their investigation.
