EDFL: Defence sets up Cougars’ big win over Burnside Heights

A sterling defensive display inspired East Keilor to a 44-point win over Burnside Heights in Essendon District Football League’s division 2 on Saturday.

The 10.16 (76) to 4.8 (32) victory maintained the second-placed Cougars’ 12-point lead over third-placed Coburg Districts.

East Keilor’s Brenden Lucas booted three majors to lead his team’s scoring, with Jake Napoli getting two.

Around the ground, Robert Rutley and Peter Tsavdaridis were both impressive.

East Keilor is now preparing for the toughest task in the division when it takes on Roxburgh Park (13 matches, 13 wins) at home at Overland Reserve at 2.15pm on Saturday.

In what has all the makings of a blockbuster, the Cougars will try to end the Magpies’
100 per cent record in what could be a preview to September’s grand final.

When the two sides met at Roxburgh Park earlier in the season, the home side came out on top by 31 points.

But the Cougars have lost only one other match for the season, in round 10 to Jacana, and are clearly the number one challenger to a Magpies’ premiership.

Elsewhere in the EDFL, Keilor kept its strong form going with a 41-point win over Essendon Doutta Stars in premier division.

The 13.12 (90) to 6.13 (49) victory was the Blues’ ninth of the year and maintains the club’s charge towards the finals.

Michael James led the scoring with four goals, while Kane Barbuto, Dean Putt and Michael Teal all booted two.
