NPL: Melbourne Knights’ ambush does it against Dandenong Thunder

Three goals in the first 22 minutes fired Melbourne Knights to an easy 4-1 win over Dandenong Thunder in the National Premier League on Saturday night.

Despite being below Thunder on the ladder, that mattered little to the Knights once the match started.

Although it was the away side, Melbourne adjusted quicker to the cold and wet conditions and found the back of the net for the first time after 13 minutes.

The goal came after a great pass from Daniel Visevic found Stipo Andrijasevic, who put his side ahead.

The Knights didn’t have to wait long to double their advantage when they were awarded a penalty kick just two minutes later.

Visevic made no mistake from the spot to increase the lead to 2-0.

Ivan Grgic scored the third goal just seven minutes later when he headed past the goalkeeper from a free kick by Visevic.

After the action-packed start, the goal rush slowed and the scores remained the same at half time.

Dandenong finally got something going in attack when the match resumed and scored in the 50th minute to give itself a chance at 3-1.

But the Knights added an exclamation mark to the victory with a fourth goal from a Michael Doyle header in the 60th minute.

Both sides had chances late in the game, but there would be no more action on the scoresheet as the Knights took home the three points.

They are now 10th on the table with 19 points from their 16 matches.

On Sunday, the Knights will be away to South Melbourne, which has won 14 of its 16 matches to sit on top of the table with 43 points.

Also in the NPL, it was a tough day at the office for Green Gully, handed a 5-1 thrashing at home by Oakleigh Cannons.

Oakleigh scored twice in the first half and three times in the second half to take the three points.

Green Gully’s goal came at the seven- minute mark of the match through Osagie Ederaro.

The Cavaliers will look to bounce back this week when they take on the Goulburn Valley Suns.
