Melbourne might be struggling through some of its coldest winter weather in recent memory, but the action on our local football fields has been nothing but hot.

The Weekly Review and Star Weekly photographers have been there to capture the action, from the suburban leagues across Melbourne to state representative football and the second annual AFL women’s game.

The Western Region Football League has seen a handful of clubs trying to keep up with undefeated Deer Park, who sit two-and-a-half games clear atop the ladder.

Tipping contests in the Victorian Amateur Football Association have been akin to a lucky dip, with all teams in the top grade capable of pulling off upsets.

There’s been changes to the order of the Riddell District Football League, with Romsey back on top, Rupertswood pushing its way into the top three and Macdeon sliding to lower reaches of the ladder.

In the Essendon District Football League, Avondale Heights has soared to be the benchmark at the halfway point of the year.

Port Melbourne has continued its dominance in the VFL, and their home ground North Port Oval played host to the VFL-SANFL representative clash in May, won by the Croweaters.

Also repping the Big V this year has been a wealth of talented TAC Cup youngsters, all looking to prove their wares in front of AFL scouts.

But it was the women who perhaps impressed more than most, with another highly skilful and mighty physical game between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

It’s been a hectic first half of footy season. Be sure to keep watch on The Weekly Review and Star Weekly for Melbourne’s best sporting photography.
