NPL: Sunshine George Cross’ young guns shine against Dandenong City

Two goals to Sunshine George Cross were enough to give it an impressive win against Dandenong City in National Premier League 1 soccer on Saturday.

The Georgies kicked a goal in each half for their 2-0 win.

Sunshine president Jamie Chetcuti was impressed by the way the young side stepped up to the challenge.

“We’ve got a team of kids,” he said. “It was great to have another win with them. That’s what this league is about and it’s great to see the young guys playing so well.

“With the injuries we’ve got – we have eight or nine players out – our kids have really stepped up. They are the future and it’s great to see that our club is in good hands.’’

Saturday’s win was Sunshine’s eighth of the season. The Georgies are ninth on the table with 28 points.

Sunshine (eighth) will take on another young side this week when it meets third-placed Box Hill.

“They’re a very good young side,” Chetcuti said.

“They’ve been through a rebuilding process and are probably nearly at the end of it. I’m sure our boys will stand up; they’re looking forward to the game.

“We are probably the youngest side in NPL and NPL1. We’ve had 16-year-olds play football this year. That’s what we’re about, giving the kids a go … we want them to be proud to play for the badge.”

In other NPL1 results, St Albans got the better of Moreland Zebras, 2-0.
