EDFL: Keilor Park earns chance for finals with win over Coburg Districts

It was the perfect weekend for Keilor Park in the Essendon District Football League.

The Devils remain a huge chance of playing finals in division 2 after securing four points and having other results go their way.

The first part of the equation for Keilor Park was getting over the top of Coburg Districts, which it was able to do by 21 points.

Despite being two spots below Coburg on the ladder, the Devils led at every change on their way to a crucial win, 12.11 (83) to 8.14 (62).

Keilor Park coach Andrew Bubb was full of praise for his side.

Bubb – who took over from former head coach Rob McCluskey a month ago – said the Devils’ five-goal opening quarter got them off to a great start.

“We kept going with it from there and didn’t let them back into the game. That was really pleasing,’’ Bubb said.

“It was great to have that four-quarter effort and it was a really mature effort.’’

The Devils lost Judd Darby to a knee injury early in the game.

“We had no bench in the last quarter as well, so it was a great effort,” Bubb said.

Local rival East Keilor helped the Devils’ cause, defeating Jacana by 85 points.

That result left Moonee Valley (fourth), Keilor Park (fifth) and Jacana (sixth) equal on 32 points.

With only the top four sides in the competition set to play finals, the Devils will travel to Jacana on Saturday, while Moonee Valley will host top of the table Roxburgh Park.

A Keilor Park win and a Moonee Valley loss would be enough for the Devils, who hope to welcome back several players from injury.

“We will try and keep it fun during the week to try and take the tension off the match, so the boys don’t get too nervous about it all,” Bubb said.

A win would cap off a great start to his reign as head coach. Before taking on the top job, Bubb was in charge of the club’s reserves side for two seasons and was a senior assistant to McCluskey.
