10 fantastic places to swim in Melbourne’s north and west this summer

Summer in Melbourne can get hot, and nothing beats a refreshing dip to cool off. Luckily, the northern and western suburbs of the city are dotted with excellent spots — from natural lagoons and rivers to modern aquatic centres and pools. Here’s a guide to 10 top places to take the plunge this season.

1. Maribyrnong Aquatic Centre – Maribyrnong

One of the best indoor-outdoor options in the west, this centre features a heated 50m pool, kids’ splash zones, and fitness facilities. Ideal for laps or family fun, the centre also hosts swimming lessons and community events.

2. Brimbank Park Lagoon – Keilor

A hidden gem along the Maribyrnong River, this peaceful lagoon offers calm waters and picnic areas. It’s perfect for a relaxing dip surrounded by nature, with walking trails nearby for post-swim strolls.

3. Craigieburn Public Swimming Pool – Craigieburn

A modern outdoor pool perfect for families and beginners. Shallow areas make it safe for kids, while lap lanes cater to those who want a serious workout in the sun.

4. Hume Aquatic and Leisure Centre – Broadmeadows

Featuring a 25m indoor pool, toddler splash areas, and outdoor leisure pools, this centre is great for year-round swimming and summer fun. Programs include water aerobics and swim squads.

5. Williamstown Beach – Williamstown

Just west of the CBD, Williamstown Beach offers shallow, calm waters and a sandy shoreline. Perfect for wading, paddling, and enjoying views of Hobsons Bay. Don’t forget your picnic!

6. Docklands Swim Spots – Northbank/Maribyrnong River

During summer, parts of the Maribyrnong River near Docklands host safe, patrolled swimming areas. Combine a swim with riverside cafes and walking paths for a full-day outing.

7. Sunshine Leisure Centre – Sunshine

This newly upgraded facility features indoor and outdoor pools, kids’ water play zones, and shaded seating. A great option for families looking for a convenient, safe swimming location.

8. Edgars Creek Aquatic Reserve – Doncaster North

For a nature-based experience, this quiet creek area allows for wading and paddling in shallow waters. Surrounded by walking trails and picnic spots, it’s a peaceful escape from city life.

9. Kooringal Pool – Tullamarine

A family-friendly outdoor pool with lap lanes, shallow areas, and ample grassy space. Ideal for kids to play while parents relax nearby.

10. Maribyrnong River Park – Footscray

While swimming isn’t recommended in all parts of the river, designated areas for wading and paddling offer a summer cooling-off spot. Paddleboards and small boats can also be enjoyed along calmer sections.

Whether you prefer a poolside splash, a river wade, or a natural lagoon, Melbourne’s north and west offer plenty of options to keep cool this summer. Don’t forget sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water — and dive in!
