Cavs lock in keeper

Two-time goalkeeper of the year Michael Weier has joined Green Gully for the National Premier League season.

The Cavaliers announced that Weier was making the switch from Hume City.

Weier, 28, has been among the state’s most respected and reliable custodians for the best part of a decade.

Arriving from Queensland in 2017, his NPL Victoria career began with a bang, scoring a 96th-minute equaliser on Hume City debut against Melbourne Knights after coming forward for a last-gasp set piece.

Weier won NPL Victoria goalkeeper of the year award in his first season and again in 2019, earning himself a move to A-League side Newcastle Jets.

He made 16 league appearances for the Novocastrians across his three seasons in the professional ranks, before returning to Hume midway through 2024 to play for now-Gully head coach David Chick.

“I obviously worked with Chicky for a long time, he’s a good mate of mine, and Craig [Filer] is a family friend, too. So it wasn’t a hard decision to come across,” says Weier.

“It’s a club I respect heavily and have always had a soft spot for.”

Weier said that the Gully coaching duo were after his signature for some time.

“Craig called me about 400 times, I answered one of them… he’s like a crazy ex, old Craig Filer,” he said.

The 6’6’’ shot-stopper is as confident coming off his line to claim crosses as he is making acrobatic diving saves.

“I like to say I’m a vocal person in the box as a goalkeeper. The boys used to say I’d swallow everything.

“First and foremost, [the goal would be] making finals and getting the club back to where it belongs,” he adds.

“The next step would be winning something.”
