Teddy bears help with mental health on RUOK? Day

Students at Deer Park North primary school participated in a range of activities for RUOK? Day on Thursday, September 9.

A major event on the day was the teddy bear hospital where 47 toys were treated by doctors working for almost five hours.

The school’s wellbeing officer Rachel Axiak believes mental health is often glossed over with children and not really talked about.

“It’s about following through and checking in with children in our community and normalising conversations about mental health,” said Ms Axiak.

“When it’s looking like something is wrong with someone, the difference between asking a simple question and approaching them can make a big difference to someone’s mental health.”

Ms Axiak said that even if kids don’t feel comfortable approaching a peer themselves, they can always let a teacher know if they think somebody needs help.
