Brimbank council has urged Labor and the Coalition to commit to funding the removal of two notorious roundabouts in Delahey and Sunshine.
Council administrators last week resolved to write to Roads Minister Terry Mulder and opposition spokesman Luke Donnellan ahead of November’s state election, seeking funding to replace roundabouts with traffic signals at the intersections of Kings and Taylors roads in Delahey, and Sunshine Avenue and the Melton Highway in Sunshine.
“VicRoads is supportive and has prepared and sought funding … but the project is currently unfunded,” council’s acting infrastructure and environment director Adrian Gray said.
More than 15 crashes happened at the roundabout at Kings and Taylors roads in the past six years. The roundabout was voted the state’s seventh-worst traffic congestion hotspot in this year’s RACV red spot survey.
Earlier this month, Keilor Labor MP Natalie Hutchins urged the government to commission an engineer’s assessment for the site.
“This roundabout causes lengthy queues along both Kings Road southbound and Taylors Road eastbound,’’ she said. ‘‘In the morning peak, anger, frustration and near misses are common as drivers try to find gaps to enter the roundabout.”
Mr Donnellan said that if elected, Labor would use money from the sale of the Port of Melbourne to fund outer suburban road projects.
Mr Mulder’s office did not respond before Star Weekly went to print.
