Council wins stormwater award

Brimbank council has been recognised for an ongoing stormwater pipe network maintenance program. The council

took out Stormwater Victoria’s award

for research and innovation for its system to manage 1200 kilometres of underground stormwater pipes and 44,000 stormwater pits. Council chairman John Watson said the award demonstrated the great work the council was doing. The council has worked with Victoria University, adopting a CCTV system to monitor the stormwater network to assess factors affecting the pipes’ condition.

Environmental grants

Brimbank and Melton residents are being encouraged to vote for garden and environmental projects benefiting local schools, kinders, parks and gardens. Organisations in the running for $5000 Back to Earth grants include Kororoit Creek kindergarten; planners of an organic edible native garden, others wanting a creekside ecological upgrade; Creekside kindergarten; and YMCA Taylors Hill for its ‘Little Green Hand Prints’ native garden. Energy savings for schools

Mackellar Primary School and Sydenham-Hillside Primary School will receive $10,000 each under a state government energy efficiency program. The government says the program will help cut each school’s costs by about $1.3 million a year.
