Inspiring the next generation of science heroes

To celebrate National Science Week, Melbourne Water is hosting an online ‘Careers in STEM’ seminar on August 12, which will feature guest speaker and Sunbury resident Sarah Beattie.

In the midst of secondary school subject selections and university open days, Ms Beattie hopes to inspire a future generation in STEM by sharing her story and pathway to becoming a Hydrology Specialist for Melbourne Water.

Having discovered her interest in science at Salesian College, Ms Beattie reflected on the role education had in developing her passions.

“No one tells you this, but STEM can be a lot of fun and my journey through education, placements, training, and work has led me to a fulfilling career where I am always learning.”

While initially exploring her possibilities, Ms Beattie volunteered for Parks Victoria and Zoos Victoria, which inspired her to gain work experience with Melbourne Zoo and Phillip Island Nature Parks while in year 10.

After completing a bachelor of science (conservation biology), Ms Beattie delved into the field of hydrology and later became a hydrology specialist for Melbourne Water.

Melbourne Water’s initiative is to keep Melbourne’s waterways clean and healthy, addressing existing issues and preparing for the future.

Monday’s webinar will highlight the future of STEM through detailing a number of different pathways students can take and providing time for questions.

“We hope that by meeting some of Melbourne Water’s science heroes at our National Science Week events, this generation of young people are inspired to pursue a career in STEM,” Ms Beattie said.

The seminar will be held from 5.30pm to 6.30pm through the link provided on Melbourne Water’s website and will be accompanied by two additional events throughout the week.
