Don’t forget about breakfast club

Students in Sydenham school Copperfield College are going hungry through the morning and need helpers to step in.

Campus Leader at Copperfield College, Ercan Hasip said the school’s breakfast club is lagging behind, leaving students without their morning meal.

“We need people to help run our breakfast club. Our breakfast club runs every weekday before school, from about 8:00am – 9:30am. Breakfast is such an important part of the day and this initiative ensures our students are nourished and ready to learn,” he said.

Australian charity EdConnect, which seeks to support students in primary and secondary schools, particularly in low socioeconomic areas, is urging anyone looking for volunteer work or to give back to the community to reach out.

Local EdConnect Liaison Officer, Rhonda Velkovski, said a good crop of volunteers is the heartbeat of a school’s community.

“Schools are very busy places, are often under-resourced, and have many competing demands. Most rely heavily on the support from their local communities,” she said.

“Volunteers assist either through one-on-one mentoring, in various classroom learning support roles or help around the school which may include school breakfast clubs, canteen, kitchen garden projects, library, administration, school gardens, and much more.

“Schools need committed people who can offer one or two days a week to help with prepping food and serving students before school.

“If you are looking for a way to contribute to your local community and future generations then consider volunteering at a local school through EdConnect.”
