FFA Cup: St Albans Saints eye upset

St Albans is throwing down the challenge to A-League soccer club Perth Glory.

The Saints have been drawn to take on Glory in the FFA Cup’s round of 16.

Having presided over just one National Premier League loss since June 14, St Albans coach Toby Paterson has full confidence in his team.

“I think we’re capable of causing an upset,” he said. “I really mean that. I’m not just saying that to get a bit of publicity.

“I’m hoping we are going to get big support for the game down in Melbourne. On the night, if we get good support, the players will lift.”

Paterson’s confidence stems from a belief that his players can take their game to another level.

With the chance to showcase their talents to a national audience, he thinks his squad is capable of going toe-to-toe with Perth’s A-League talent.

“There are players who are putting themselves in the spotlight, trying to secure themselves contracts to play in higher competitions,” he said.

“They have a lot to play for; they could be playing for their futures.”

The game will also pit Paterson against his former mentor, Kenny Lowe. The Perth coach guided Paterson during his playing career in England.

The FFA Cup match will be played at Knights Stadium from 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 23.
