East Esplanade in St Albans is set to become a safer and more pedestrian friendly street.

Brimbank council said the planned upgrades will make it safer and easier for shoppers to walk between the train station and the shops.

The upgrades include, two new pedestrian crossing points, across East Esplanade and Victoria Crescent, upgraded footpaths and more space for on-street trading and more greenery, tree planting, street furniture and flag poles.

Lighting upgrades are expected to bring some colour and light to the laneway between Princess Street and Main Road East.

The permanent feature lighting will make the area safer and more welcoming.

The lighting will be attached to the entire length of the Woolworth’s wall, to create a crowning effect. The lighting colours will change to create visual interest and a sense of place.

The works are due to start in mid-2024.

Council said this lighting project represents the first stage of a transformation of the laneway, with other improvements on the way. These may include artwork on the roadway and the walls.
